Welcome to our web site and on-line catalog!
The Albert Lea Seed House began in 1923 as a family-owned seed store offering field seed and garden seed, amongst other things. Saturday nights were the big sales nights as farmers and their families made the weekly trek into town to do their shopping. Watermelons, potatoes, field seed, and garden items were offered along with a few good stories and some friendly banter. Founder Lou Ehrhardt, always sharply dressed in shirt and tie, would welcome all to consider his offerings at the Seed House.
A lot of things have changed on the agricultural landscape in the past 80 years but some basic things have remained the same. Farmers still take pride in being their own boss and making their living off the land. Farmers still go to bed each night knowing they put in an honest day of hard work. And you can still buy high quality field and garden seed at the Albert Lea Seed House over a cup of coffee and some stories of your own.
Owners Tom and Mac Ehrhardt, grandsons of Lou Ehrhardt, currently operate the Seed House. You can still call and talk directly with them. They love to hear of your successes and truly want to be of assistance with any concerns that may arise. When is the last time you talked with the owner of that huge multi-national seed company?
The Albert Lea Seed House offers you high quality field seed from Viking Brand seed corn, Viking Brand soybeans, cool-season grasses, pasture mixes, and alfalfas, to organic seed, small grain, annual forages, native grasses and forbs. We also have a huge selection of sweet corn and garden seed. As you will see, our seed selection is large and diverse.
Farmers and growers like you have appreciated our prices, and respected our simple, fair approach to pricing that doesn't involve hidden deals. We have expanded our genetic options, increased access to traits and seed treatments, and offer new financing and other services. Today you will find elite genetics and leading-edge technologies at prices up to 40% less than traditional seed brands.
We are able to ship seed anywhere in the world using Speedee, UPS, and/or LTL freight. For more information on shipping charges, you may click on Shipping Information. Often, our seed prices added with the shipping charges are still less expensive than the seed you can find in your own area.
We maintain professional memberships with the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association, Western Seed Association, Sustainable Agriculture Association, Minnesota Corn Growers Association, and the Independent Professional Seedsmen Association. In addition, we are Certified Organic Processors meeting the National Organic Program standards for processing organically-raised grains and soybeans.
We have been located at our current facility since 1976. Our plant is designed to process three lines of seed products simultaneously. The facility has expended grain storage capacity of 350,000 bushels and maintains 69,000 square feet of warehouse space. Seed produced and conditioned by the Albert Lea Seed House has been grown and labeled in accordance with the rules and inspections established by the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association for certified seed.
We encourage you to contact us for the wealth of information included in our annual Field Seed Catalog.
