Winter Survival Index (WSI) — A standardized test that measures the ability of alfalfa varieties to withstand severe winters. Varieties are rated from 1 (superior) to 4 (adequate). If a variety does not have a WSI rating, you can use the Fall Dormancy as a guide. The most persistent alfalfas are those with low WSIs and good pest and disease resistance. Fall Dormancy (FD) — The measure of how tall an alfalfa plant grows after the last cutting and before going dormant for the season. An alfalfa with a lower number goes dormant earlier in the fall. Disease & Pest Resistance (DRI) — Poorly drained fields require alfalfas with better disease resistance (especially Phytophthora and phanomyces). Select varieties with superior disease resistance to ensure a long, productive stand. |
PRR – Phytophthora Root Rot SN – Stem Nematode BW – Bacterial Wilt FW – Fusarium Wilt VW – Verticillium Wilt APH1 – Aphanomyces Race 1 APH2 – Aphanomyces Race 2 An – Anthracnose Race 1 PA – Pea Aphid SAA – Spotted Alfalfa Aphid T.T. – Traffic Tolerance Resistance Resistance HR = Highly Resistant R = Resistant MR = Moderately Resistant LR = Low Resistance S = Susceptible DRI = Disease Resistance Index (30 = highest, 6 = lowest) |
