Mustard
Mustards are relatively new cover crop species to the Midwest but are well known in their ability for quick growth & soil coverage, competing well with weeds through allelopathy and acting as a suppressor of soil pests. Though results are mixed, research has suggested glucosinolates in the mustard plant, once tilled in, may inhibit the growth & severity of soil-borne fungi & nematodes. Mustard will produce hard seed so ensure timely control once plant flowers.
