  • Crown will spread very slowly by means of extremely short, stout rhizomes
  • Thrives in dryer mid-grass prairie section of the Great Plains, but is considered only moderately tolerant to drought
  • Naturally occurs in mixed stands with blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis) and little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium)
  • Adapted to calcareous and moderately alkaline soils
  • Best stands found on medium- to fine-textured upland soils
  • Tolerant of spring flooding
